The island of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at Greece's annexation of the island was followed by violence against the island's Turkish Cypriots and Ankara's subsequent intervention as a guarantor power. The US considers the status quo in Cyprus unacceptable and supports efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
Last month, the US State Department stated that "cooperation between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus is at an historic high.
